The Half of It!

Although we focused on Dr. Seuss for most of the day, during math we veered off into fractions!

We read the first half (no pun intended) of "Give Me Half"!

Then we practiced folding shapes in half to find the line of symmetry. The kids practiced writing 1/2 and shading a few shapes to show 1/2 of a whole.

As the kids finished their shapes, I helped them create a mirror image painting by drawing the line of symmetry then painting one side and folding! Finally, they created a label to show exactly where the line of symmetry was!

At the end of the day I asked the kids to share their favorite part of the day and so many of them said math! Music to my ears!

Dr Seuss: Day 1

Today, we began celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss. His birthday his actually on Wednesday but all of his great books can't be read in one day so we will be reading his books all week!

We began this morning by discussing that Dr. Seuss is a real person. I pulled
up a picture of the Cat in the Hat and asked the students if this was Dr. Seuss. They all responded with yes which led us into pulling up some pictures of Theodor Seuss Geisel to see that he was a real man that is an author and illustrator.

We talked about how Dr. Seuss is a really special person because he is such a great author and illustrator that always uses his imagination. We briefly reviewed what setting meant before reading "The Lorax" and focusing on Seuss's elaborate and creative setting that he created. After reading the story, the kids created their own drawings of Seuss's truffula trees and other unique attributes.

I worried that the book may be too long to keep their attention or that it's length may hinder their comprehension but that was so not the case! The kids were so cute in their reactions: "That's mean!", "Why don't they stop making thneeds?", "That's sad!". I was impressed to see their responses.

Some of their work:

Then during snack, we read "I'm Not Going to Get Up Today". The kids loved the book and all wanted to tell stories about the times when they didn't want to get out of bed! They each colored a bed and we glued on pictures of them pretending to sleep!

I am in week 8 of student teaching and I am all about it!
I decided to start this blog to share some of the happenings in the classroom that I am a part of and hope to continue sharing when I (hopefully!) have a classroom of my own!
